{CURRENLY} and a Writer's Workshop/Daily 5 {CoNuNdRuM}!!

Hello, all!!!

I had a saddening, somewhat frightening, realization this week.  I could not, LITERALLY, could not do the July {CURRENTLY} until today.  My fingers would not let me near the computer to even get a head start on it.

Hello, my name is Mandi Palmer and I have OCD (apparently).  How ridiculous is that?!?!?!?  It seemed wrong to begin on the July {CURRENTLY} until it was officially July 1st.  I have a sickness.  BUT....now that it's time......here we go.......some {CURRENTLY} fun with Farley!
It is CUH~razy how many people link up with this part-ay each month!  Go link up and join in the fun!

Moving on to my Writer's Workshop/Daily 5 conundrum:
How do you do both??  Can you do both??  I love Daily 5!!  I love the way it soaks kids in literacy from every possible angle.  I love how it fosters independence {this helps sooooo much when I'm meeting with my small groups}.  I love, love, LOVE Daily 5!  I also really, really, REALLY want to incorporate Writer's Workshop.

Now, I've heard that Daily 5 can be like a lot of little reader's and writer's workshops.  I get that.  BUT......I need specifics.  Do I have them do something in "Work on Writing" in Daily 5 that directly correlates with what we are doing in WW (Writer's Workshop)?  Do you do WW separately that Daily 5???  I need HELP!!!  Does anyone do both?  Any suggestions will do!!!!

Also, in my desire to learn more about WW, I ran across this **FABULOUS** resource from Amanda at One Extra Degree!  I cannot wait to dive into this!!!

Again.....if any of you fabulous, wonderfully creative veteran teachers out there have any (and I do mean ANY) advice on my conundrum......I would really appreciate it!

Keep livin' the dream,

  1. Hi! I'm now following you, love your cheerful blog design, and am happy to share some Daily 5/WW advice!

I did both with my kindergartners, although our school had a workbook-based phonics curriculum and no other teacher (except my pal in 2nd gr) did anything other than the workbook. I used Read To Self/Someone during our "rest" time in the afternoon, starting in 2nd quarter, plus during stations. The computer and iPad were part of our morning literacy rotations. I began each day with a mini-lesson in reading and writing, after morning meeting. Most days, a read-aloud was part of that lesson. I learned a lot last summer from studying "In Pictures And In Words" by Katie Wood Ray!

I taught full-day K, and added a longer stretch of time on Thursdays and Fridays for Writer's Workshop. As the year progressed, we began to do W/W most days, saving an Author's Chair time for Friday afternoons. My students soon began to choose to work on their books whenever they would finish something early or during a free time. Writer's Workshop is a beautiful thing! If you can make each child realize that s/he is an author, from day 1, you will have an amazing time with it!

I look forward to following you! :-)

  2. I think pretty much every one of my Currentlys says "FRIENDS" for Listening! It's ALWAYS on in my house too!!! I do writers workshop & D5 a little different- I do one hour of writing first thing in the morning, and then an hour and a half right after that of D5. Our school is mandated to have 2 1/2 hours each morning for our language arts block, so this works out well. The only probablem is there is NEVER enough time for Eveyrthing- I'm always cut short during our writing block, and the kids hardly ever get to all 5 D5 stations in one day (three most days, four on a great day). Hope this helps! Do what's best for you and your kiddos!!! :)

  4. Hi Mandi,

Thanks for your blog and your enthusiasm for all that you are learning. Although this blog is 2 years old I find myself pondering the relationship between writers workshop and Daily 5. I have taught Daily 5 for many years and would like to implement Writers Workshop as well. My issue relates to how to blend the two or carve out enough time to both. I have a first/second grade combo class and use Daily 5 time to teach reading groups. How did you end up working both of this into your schedule?

    Thanks!

    Adrian
